Jermy Charles West

He was born in Lowestoft in 1825 and named after his uncle, Isaac Preston, who took the name of Jermy. At the age of 17 he went to India as a cadet in the 11th Madras infantry. He was very eccentric which earned him the nickname of 'Mad Jermy'.

When he retired from the service at the age of 50 he returned to England and married Emilie Herbert, who was nearly 20 younger than him. He died in 1879 in Portswood, near Southampton. He is buried in Southampton cemetery. His wife died in 1913.
