Colonel Philip Hugh Dalbiac

 

He was born in 1855 and educated at Winchester. In 1875 he joined the 70th Regiment but soon after switched to the 45th Foot. He retired from the army in 1890 with the rank of major. From 1895 to 1900 he was the Conservative MP for North Camberwell. Even as an MP he retained an active interest in military matters and from 1896 to 1908 he commanded the 18th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers.

When the Territitorial Force was formed in 1908 he commanded the 2nd London Divisional and Supply Column and following the outbreak of war in 1914 he took the unit to France and later Salonica, gaining mentions in dispatches. For his work in forming and training the column he was awarded the Companion of the Bath at George V's coronation.

From 1914 he was a director of George Allen and Unwin, the publishers. He himself wrote a number of books including The History of the 60th Division, The History of the Nottinghamshire Regiment and a Dictionary Of Quotations.

In 1888 he married Lilian Seely, daughter of Sir Charles Seely. He died on 28th April 1927 in Freshwater, Isle Of Wight.
