William Henry Gorman

Son of Archdeacon Gorman, Rector of Thomastown, he was born in Kilkenny in 1860. He joined the East Surrey Regiment in 1883 and after short tours of Gibraltar and India served in South Africa from 1884 to 1891. He was severely wounded in action during the Boer War whilst serving with the 31st Regt (1st Bn East Surreys). He was invalided out of the service in 1900. During the 1st World War he occupied an important position in the War Office, being promoted to Major in 1918. He married Florence Hickman in 1897 and they had 3 children - Kathleen, Harry & Robert.
