Eliza Barker

She was born in 1885 in Limehouse, London as Eliza but later only used the name Elizabeth. Although coming from a very humble background she was well-educated and became manager of the Great Eastern Hotel. When she married Henry Faulkner in 1919 she already had 2 illegitimate children. Henry died in 1923 while she was carrying her 3rd child - she never remarried.

In the late 1920's she became interested in politics and was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party. She moved to Kingsbury NW London in 1940 and in 1947 helped start the Fryent branch of Wembley North Conservative Association. She was an active member for the next 40 years, canvassing and organising voting at elections as well as serving on the Women's Advisory Committee. She died in 1972 and is buried in Carpenders Park, near Watford.
