General Sir James Charles Dalbiac

He was born in London in 1776 and entered the Army in 1793 as cornet of the 4th Dragoons. He fought at the Battle Of Talamanca in 1809 and commanded the regiment at Campo-Mayor the following year. In 1812 he was actively engaged at the battles of Los Santos, Llerena and Salamanca. For the gallantery of the regiment at the last named, the 4th Dragoons have ever since been allowed to bear the word 'Salamanca' on its standards.

After leaving the army he turned to politics and became MP for Ripon in 1823. He was also author of a Military Catechism used for the instruction for cavalry officers.

His only daughter, Susanna Stephania, married James Innes-Ker and became the Duchess of Roxburgh.

His portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery collection. He died in 1879.
