Henry James Pelham West

He was born in Gibraltar in 1833 and became a solicitor working in Dublin. He was twice elected President of the Incorporated Law Society.In 1856 he married his first wife, Mary Fitzsimons, in Kilkenny by whom he had 5 children. In 1884 he left Mary and took up temporary residence in London with Mary Teresa Barry by whom he had one child that year. Mary Fitzsimons died in in August 1885 and after waiting 'the correct time' he married the woman 'who trusted in his honour'. They were married in Hammersmith Church, the only people present were the clergyman, clerk and pew opener. Mary already had 2 daughters from a previous marriage.

He returned to Ireland and went back to work as a solicitor to James Lane who built houses in Currabinny, Cork. He moved to Currabinny in 1894 and then in 1898 moved to Manchester and then Liverpool. His second wife died of acute alcoholism in 1901. In 1903, on doctor's advice to find a warmer climate, he moved to Torquay and then Dawlish, Devon. He died in Dawlish in 1905.
